history
Founded by Sam Meersman, firethaw studio is a creative space to present his original works, designs, and other forms of visual expression. Sam is a visual artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, working primarily in ceramics.
The firethaw name is a combined anagram of the four classical elements:
EARTH — WATER — AIR — FIRE
and the later fifth element — AETHER
The firethaw meaning is twofold. The roots of the name mirror the ceramic process. Clay is taken from the earth, combined with water to create unique forms, undergoes a drying process from air, and is ultimately fired at extreme temperatures. However, the name also has a deeper meaning. The four classical elements represent human interpretation of the natural world, while the fifth element symbolizes the universe beyond our sphere. This interpretation was based on observation and experimentation, shared experiences, and a search for understanding. It was also imperfect and evolved over time. Works of art and creativity often follow a similar journey.
